Celebration of Valentine’s Day Around The World

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, so probably some of you are already planning on what you will be doing that day, or maybe some still don’t know what to do because they have a tight budget. Well, did you know that Valentine’s Day isn’t really known to be celebrated in every country? So it doesn’t really matter if you celebrate it or not, people who are single tend to just spend their day either spoiling themselves, being with friends and family or treat it as if it is just an ordinary day. But Valentine’s Day is more than just a holiday, you might be shocked when you find out about some of these surprising facts you didn’t know how Valentine’s Day is being celebrated around the world.
#1 S.A.D.
Yes, there is such thing as Single Awareness Day and it is obviously on Valentine’s Day. Simply because, for the past couple of years, it has been a tradition to dedicate Valentine’s Day for people who are in love. So technically, if you are single, you don’t have any partner to spend it with, hence it’s called Single Awareness Day. Basically, if you are not in a relationship with someone romantically, you can join with the other people who are the same and celebrate having a single life. No need to mope around and feel left out, there are a lot of benefits and advantages when you are single. There are also some people who celebrate it the day after Valentine’s Day or February 15.
#2 LOVE NOTES
Some people just could not stand being single on Valentine’s Day, so they just spend this day to look for someone to spend it with. According to Hallmark, one of the most famous brands of cards, there are more than 150 million cards that go around the world on Valentine’s Day. It is considered to be the 2nd most popular greeting card to be given to someone (Christmas holds the record for the Most Popular Card) Hallmark also said that more than 50% of Valentine’s Day cards are purchased a week before the holiday.
#3 WORLDWIDE CELEBRATION

South America
Some countries in Latin America celebrate Valentine’s Day as a holiday not just for lovers, but for people to be affectionate to others. In Costa Rica, Colombia, Puerto Rico and Mexico, it is referred to as “Dia del Amor y la Amistad” or the Day of Love and Friendship. But in Guatemala, it is known as the Affection Day or the “Dia del Carino”. Brazilians referred to it as a couple’s day as well just like in the United States, however, they don’t celebrate it in February instead they celebrate it on June 12 because it is the date before St. Anthony’s Day, which is more commonly known as the Marriage Day, hence, June is considered to be the best month to get married. The women traditionally perfume different rituals for them to find the “perfect partner”

Asia
The people of China actually have their own version of Valentine’s Day which is called the Chinese Valentine’s Day, which is being celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh month. In Japan, on the other hand, it is accustomed that the women are supposed to be the one to give the men chocolates or any sweets to show their affection. It is also traditional to give chocolates instead of cards, flowers or any other stuff. That is why Japanese chocolate companies earn so much during Valentine’s Day. However, a dinner date on Christmas Eve is far more romantic than it is on Valentine’s Day. In the Philippines, it is known as “Araw ng mga Puso” or the Day of Hearts. Just like in the United States, flowers, chocolates, and dinner dates are the most common way to celebrate this holiday.

Europe
In Wales, instead of celebrating it on February, they celebrate it on the 25th of January, because that is the day or St. Dwynwen, who is the patron saint of Welsh couples. But unlike any other country, Finland and Estonia spend this holiday as a Friendship Day instead of a Day for Lovers, so if you are bitter about Valentine’s Day, just take a trip to Finland or Estonia.
