What Is The Michael Fish Effect?

Michael Fish was a British television meteorologist who had many devoted fans. Unfortunately, his credibility was questioned after a 1987 broadcast when he rejected a woman’s warning that a hurricane was heading for the United Kingdom, assuring the public there was nothing to worry about. Regrettably, the devastating storm arrived and resulted in the death of over 15 people and destroyed countless properties.

Following the incident, Fish apologized for his false forecast. “The Michael Fish effect” was then coined, which describes any incorrect prediction made by the public. Consequently, some British weather forecasters began predicting a worst-case scenario to avoid being wrong.
