Nothing Like A Canine Companion
Watching the news can be discouraging, as many stories of crime and unfairness exist. To bring some joy to the program, having animals as guests can make the show more entertaining. This was certainly the case in 2014 when Mike Sobel, a Global Edmonton anchor, had an unexpected visitor during his weather report.
Ripple the Dog from the Edmonton Humane Society appeared out of nowhere, causing Sobel to laugh and the viewers to be delighted. The surprise interruption from the then-one-year-old Shepherd Mastiff mix created a cheerful atmosphere and brought much amusement to the broadcast. Following the appearance, Ripple was adopted by a couple from Alberta.
