In the mid-’80s, a global lack of discussion about HIV/AIDS led to misunderstandings, reinforcing prejudice towards gay men. Many world leaders didn’t want to discuss the epidemic while people lay dying. It wasn’t prevalent knowledge that HIV couldn’t be passed on through skin-on-skin contact, but in April 1987, Princess Diana shook an AIDS patient’s hand in front of the world’s media.

Then, Diana made history in 1992 by becoming the first royal to visit a center for people living with HIV and AIDS called the London Lighthouse. At the time, Sylvia Killick was the only female resident there. This visit raised awareness, as people affected were often stigmatized and ignored by society.
