La madre de Jennifer Love Hewitt, Patricia Mae (Shipp), es patóloga del habla y el lenguaje, y su padre, Herbert Daniel Hewitt, es técnico médico. Jennifer Love Hewitt nació en Waco, Texas. Su ascendencia se remonta a Alemania, Inglaterra, Italia, Francia y Escocia. Su hermano mayor, Todd Daniel Hewitt, quien nació el 8 de noviembre de 1970, le dio su primer nombre. Le puso el nombre de una niña rubia de la que finalmente se enamoró, y él eligió el nombre para ella. Su madre tomó el segundo nombre de Jennifer, Love (que Jennifer ahora usa cuando no está actuando), de su mejor amiga durante su tiempo en la universidad. A la edad de seis meses, sus padres se divorciaron y se la llevaron con ellos. Harker Heights, Texas, sirvió como escenario para su crianza por parte de su madre. Hizo su primera aparición pública como actriz cuando tenía solo tres años y cantó en un espectáculo de vacas. A la edad de cinco años, comenzó a entrenar tap, jazz y ballet, lo que eventualmente la llevó a unirse al Texas Show Team. Con ese grupo realizó una gira por la Unión Soviética y Europa.
