The feminine English first name Shirley derives from the Old English elements scire (shire) and lah (woodland, clearing, meadow, enclosure). Shirley is a common name in the county of Shropshire.
The name Shirley was first given to a man, but after Charlotte Bronte gave it to one of her female characters in the novel Shirley, the name began to be used in a female context (1849). There have also been occurrences of the name Shirley being written with the spelling Shirlee.
It has not been in the top 100 most popular female names in the United States since the 1950s, when it was at its peak.
