Van Halen ha luchado con el abuso de las drogas y del alcohol por más de veinte años con algunas fases sobrias y esto no solo ha afectado su carrera, sino que también afectó a su matrimonio. Su matrimonio con Valerie Bertinelli terminó en divorcio en el 2007. A pesar de sus viajes seguidos a rehabilitación, Van Halen también ha pasado varias veces por el quirófano, ya sea por su reemplazo de cadera o por heridas accidentales o por dolencias. Tristemente, el músico también ha tenido que enfrentar el cáncer oral, y esperamos que su consejero financiero haya podido arreglar su seguro de salud a tiempo. A pesar de las batallas personales, Van Halen continúa invirtiendo en la música y también está activo en el escenario.
