When the Swedish Nuclear Plant informed the world about the high levels of radiation, the Soviet Union found itself in trouble as the west was constantly putting Soviet officials under pressure for a concrete explanation. The Soviets had no choice but to admit that an accident had really taken place that claimed two lives. They divulged nothing about how many lives were indeed lost and what were the consequences of the Chernobyl explosion and even kept their own people in darkness. On May 6, the Soviet Union finally confessed that something was wrong as they had to shut the banks and the schools down in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, which was located around 65 miles from the nuclear plant.
