Filiado ao Partido Republicano, foi eleito pela primeira vez em 7 de outubro de 2003 e empossado no dia 1º de novembro de 2003. Schwarzenegger foi reeleito em 2006, derrotando o democrata Phil Angelides. Ele também foi nomeado, pela revista Time, como uma das 100 pessoas que ajudaram a moldar o mundo. Mesmo estando na política, Arnald nunca deixou de cuidar do seu corpo e com tanta preocupação com a aparência, a estrela usou, durante muitos anos, vários esteroides e nunca negou tal prática.
