O dramaturgo e ator americano Nelsan Ellis recebeu elogios por sua performance como Lafayette Reynolds na série de TV da HBO True Blood, que lhe deu um Satellite Award, entre outros prêmios. Sua interpretação de Shinwell Johnson no drama Elementary recebeu muitos elogios também e seus papéis no cinema, que incluem Eddie Sweat, também conquistaram vários fãs. Ellis teve problemas com álcool, mas em vez de visitar uma reabilitação, ele optou por se livrar de seu vício por conta própria. A síndrome de abstinência alcoólica levou à sua morte em 8 de julho de 2017.
