Former NBA Players Who Surprised Everyone With Their Choice of Jobs After Retirement

LaRue Martin – Community Services Manager At UPS

Former No. 1 overall pick LaRue Martin is one of the best examples of how a career turned out to be big at the onset, but gradually fizzled out. The Portland Trail Blazers was the top pick on Martin in 1972, just before the team Buffalo Braves drafted Bob McAdoo. Things did not work out for Martin in the NBA, and he sought a much better path with the United Parcel Service or UPS.

He quit the league and went to work for UPS as an entry-level employee to pay for the expenses. His perseverance and hard effort were suitably rewarded. In 2005, he was promoted to Community Services Manager.

Apart from his regular job, he has also been a member of the National Basketball Retired Players Association’s Board of Directors. He seems to be happy in his new job role.
