Many sources over the internet say that the feather that landed next to Forrest’s foot was actually to signify all the hardships and troubles Gump had been through. During the start of the movie, the feather was seen near his feet (signifying that he had problems running). But by the end of the movie, you could spot the feather in his hands, signifying that he finally managed to overcome all his troubles.
