Though it’s not specified in the film how Jenny dies, in the book sequel Gump & Co., the author wrote that Jenny, (Forrest’s childhood friend and eventually, the mother of his child) a former drug addict dies after contracting Hepatitis C. Since Hepatitis C was still an unknown ailment until 1989, Jenny says she was suffering from an unknown virus in the movie (though, as previously mentioned, some speculated she had HIV). Unlike cancer treatment, Jenny’s disease was incurable at that time which led to her eventual death.
