The scene where Forrest is being awarded the Medal of Honor from President Lyndon B. Johnson is actually a footage of Sammy L. Davis receiving the prestigious medal in real life. The movie makers took special permission from the respective attorney to superimpose Hanks’s head digitally on Davis’ body. This made the scene more realistic rather than having them create a digital image which would have no doubt seemed less authentic.
