The name Cleo comes from the Greek language, and can mean either “glory” or “to praise”. It can be used by either gender, but most commonly by women.

The name is said to be a diminutive of either Cleopatra or Cleophus, which is supported by several sources. A variety of the name Clio, spelled in various ways, is also valid. Between the years 1915 and 1926, the name enjoyed its greatest level of usage. After that, it completely disappeared from common usage for the next fifty years (perhaps due to the release of the silent film Cleopatra starring Theda Bara and the discovery of Egyptian tombs).
