27. Cora

The Greek name Kóra is said to have been given the Latin form of the first name Cora when it was Latinized.

In Greek mythology, the name Cora was first given to Persephone, who was Zeus and Demeter’s daughter. Persephone was the original bearer of the name. After her marriage to Hades and subsequent coronation as queen of the underworld, Cora would have legally changed her name to that of Persephone. A female is referred to when the name “Maiden” or “Daughter” is used.
According to one school of thought, the name Cora derives from the Gaelic word cora, which can be translated as “just,” “honest,” “virtuous,” or “good.” There are numerous alternative ways of spelling the name, including Corah, Kora, and Korra, amongst others.
