UN AFFRONTEMENT SERRÉ ENTRE DEUX MÂLES DOMINANTS
Les duels entre cerfs constituent un spectacle courant dans la nature. Ces majestueux animaux s’affrontent principalement pour établir leur suprématie sur un territoire ou conquérir le cœur d’une biche pendant la saison des amours. Il est également rare que les mâles perdent la vie lors de ces combats, qui sont avant tout compétitifs.
Lors de ces affrontements, les cerfs se heurtent avec leurs bois. L’idée qu’un cerf doté de bois plus imposants soit assuré de remporter la victoire est erronée. La carrure générale du mâle joue un rôle plus décisif dans l’issue du combat, comme le souligne la biologiste Grant Woods dans le film « Outdoor Life ».
