The gold supply of the entire world mostly comes from South Africa, which produces about 500 tons of gold each year. The working conditions in the South African gold mines are hellish and inhuman. The mines can go as deep as 12,000 feet, and it can get as hot as 130 degrees Fahrenheit. Excavating just an ounce of gold takes about 38 hours of mining.
