The Never-Ending Day: Exploring Iceland’s ‘Midnight Sun
During the summer months, Iceland’s days are long and filled with the surreal experience of the ‘midnight sun’. This phenomenon occurs for a few days each year and the sun stays out for up to 21 hours. As a result, most stores close around 5:00 p.m. and reopen the following morning at 9:00 a.m.
However, tourist shops in cities like Reykjavik often stay open later in order to accommodate the influx of tourists. Consequently, it isn’t uncommon to find yourself shopping for souvenirs at 10:00 p.m., while still basking in the light of the sun.
