The meaning of the Hebrew name Esther is “hive” and “conceal” when translated into English. Esther, the main character of the biblical book of the same name, is a well-known person in the annals of Jewish history.
According to the Hebrew Bible, Queen Esther was given the first name Hadassah (“Myrtle”) when she was born. Her name was changed once she became Queen of Persia, so her true identity could not be discovered.
Some people believe that Esther’s name derives from the Babylonian goddess of love known as Ishtar, while others believe that it originates from the Old Persian word stra, which means “star”.
