Nachdem die anfängliche Bedrohung durch radioaktives Jod abgeklungen war, ging die größte Gefahr vom Boden aus. Bei der Explosion wurden Cäsium-137 und Strontium-90 freigesetzt. Strontium-90 ist ein Isotop auf Kalziumbasis und wurde in Spuren in der Milch aus den von der Explosion betroffenen Gebieten gefunden. Cäsium-137 ist auf Kaliumbasis und kommt in tierischem Gewebe und Blut vor. Nachdem eine Reihe von Menschen beschlossen hatte, in Ihre Heimat zurückzukehren, verzehrten sie Milch und Fleisch aus der Umgebung und wurden so ebenfalls kontaminiert. Diese Vorfälle haben sich als wahr erwiesen und wurden sogar von Anwälten für Menschenrechte dokumentiert. Selbst Pilze in den Wäldern Westeuropas wurden kontaminiert und ungenießbar.
