Man könnte meinen, dass die erste Explosion die tödlichste für die Menschen war, die in der Anlage arbeiteten. Die Reinigungsarbeiten forderten jedoch einen hohen Tribut an Menschenleben und hatten eine weitaus verheerendere Wirkung. Die Fakten deuten darauf hin, dass nur zwei Kraftwerksarbeiter bei der ersten Explosion ihr Leben verloren, während in den ersten vier Monaten der Aufräumarbeiten etwa 26 Arbeiter ihr Leben ließen. Unfallanwälte wie Beamte erklären, dass es die Radioaktivität war, die so viele Menschenleben forderte, und feiern die 28 Arbeiter als Helden. Einige von ihnen waren sich der Tatsache bewusst, dass sie während der Aufräumarbeiten ihr Leben verlieren könnten, aber sie haben trotzdem weitergemacht, weil es notwendig war.
