Con un historial de nueve premios Óscar en su haber y una trayectoria profesional de más de treinta años, el cineasta, guionista y compositor de origen Chileno, se ha convertido en una de las figuras más aclamadas del ámbito. Ha sido merecedor de cinco Premios Goya gracias a producciones como Tesis, Mar adentro y Los otros.
Al igual que muchas personalidades del mundo del espectáculo, Alejandro se ha declarado abiertamente homosexual en 2004. Se ha pronunciado muy discreto sobre el tema, considerando que hablarlo sin tapujos es una forma de normalizar la homosexualidad. Ha vivido un sólido matrimonio con David Blanco, hasta su divorcio en 2019.
