Although Arthur Guinness founded the brand after signing a 9,000-year lease on the Dublin brewery in 1759, Guinness took up its trademark harp symbol only later, say 100 years later.
Arthur Guinness decided to start his brewery in a shutdown building in Dublin. He chose the place as he had to pay just 45 pounds a year for 9,000 years as rent. Guinness then specialized in stout, a beer that was distinctive for being dark, almost black color.
Then, many decades later the company exported its beers through the length and breadth of the British Empire, and then around the world, it soon became the most famous stout. It was a combination of factors such as strong brand image, advertising, and its famous toucan bird used as a logo that made the brand so successful. The harp symbol as a logo was used as early as 1862, enabling the Guinness logo to stand the test of time.
