Atelier, co-produced by Fuji Television, had a brilliant start on Netflix, but it’s widely believed that Netflix didn’t do justice to the show in terms of marketing. The series follows the struggle of a Japanese country girl who got caught up in a ruthlessly posh lingerie industry obsessed with fashion and anti-aging products. Although Mayuko Tokito is perfectly knowledgeable about everything lingerie and textiles, she feels ill at ease in an industry that values attitude and looks above everything else. While Atelier caught the attention of Netflix watchers in the West, Netflix didn’t market it well, and the show was literally lost in the seemingly endless library of Netflix. As a result, the one-season show never returned. Mirei Kiritani, the Japanese lead actress of the series, is now busy acting in Japanese movies.
