When it comes to serving the country, nothing can get bigger than that. Therefore, there was no way that Steven could compromise on that front. He knew what his responsibilities were and he was not ready to sacrifice them. Before he entered into a relationship with Caroline, Steven was a part of the military.
As a result, his commitment to the army and the country was more important for him than anything else. Things were going smoothly between him and Caroline initially. But the birth of Jonathan brought many problems for the couple. It meant that Steven had to give more time to the baby and that wasn’t possible for him.
