Jane Powell was pretty much a local celebrity in her hometown, Portland, even before she set foot in Hollywood. In the mid-1940s, a young and dynamic Powell moved to Los Angeles where she signed a contract with MGM. Subsequently, her acting and singing talents were brought into play with a series of musicals, including the likes of A Date With Judy and Nancy Goes To Rio. However, she reached global stardom by pairing with one of the finest dancers ever, Fred Astaire, in Royal Wedding. As her film career started to slow down in the following decade, she quickly switched to stage and got back on track. Although she hasn’t officially announced her retirement just as yet, the 89-year-old makes it a point to spend quality time at the gym, just to maintain her extraordinary fitness.
