This artist’s depiction of a giant koi is fascinating for many reasons. Koi have long been intertwined with Japanese culture, as raising them is a national pastime. However, the rest of the world has caught up, and koi are also raised in Australia, Israel, and the United States.
The fish are also considered a great investment, with one large koi selling for as much as $60K. The rings around its outer scale also determine the age of the fish. The oldest is Hanoko, who lived from 1751 to 1977. Unlike this depiction, Hanoko was scarlet.
