UAE’s Exotic Pet Laws

Until 2017, spotting a big cat riding a car in the UAE wasn’t out of the ordinary. But times have changed. A 2017 UAE law now prohibits parading “wild and domesticated but dangerous animals” as pets. As Dubai’s Gulf News reported, flaunting an exotic creature in public could lead to a jail stint of up to six months, a hefty fine of $136K, or both.

Historically, owning such majestic beasts in Gulf states signaled prestige and wealth, with social media flaunting cheetahs on the roofs of luxury cars. The new mandate restricts these animals to zoos and specific centers. Additionally, dog owners must leash their pets in public and possess a permit.
