A Bedouin Tradition
The elites of the Emirates have long embraced a tradition of keeping exotic pets. For them, a cheetah in the backseat or a tiger roaming their gardens was not just about opulence but a deep-rooted cultural symbol of status and power. This fascination can be traced back to Bedouin traditions, where wild animals were seen as companions and even markers of nobility.
Until 2017, when the UAE instituted a ban, these animals were often paraded as symbols of prestige. While many were treated as cherished family members living in lavish surroundings, it remains an emblematic chapter in Dubai’s storied relationship with luxury.
