Merlos a dû s’excuser publiquement pour cette maladresse, surtout que sa vie personnelle était déjà sous les projecteurs à cause de son divorce. Bien que l’incident ait fait les choux gras de la presse, il a été rapidement oublié, et Merlos a continué sa carrière, devenant même président du groupe « The El Mundo Financiero ».
