But after careful analysis, it’s possible to see that there are two women in the photo, not just one. It’s disappointing, as we thought we were looking at a real-life mermaid for the first time!
Mermaids have been the subjects of myths and legends for millennia, with the first references to the fantastical half-woman, half-fish creatures appearing in Syria around 1,000 B.C. Early mermaid tales were inspired by the Assyrian goddess Atargatis.
