The athlete on display is the American former competition swimmer Tyler Clary, who landed an Olympic gold medal in 2012.
It was also in 2012 that he was captured by the lenses of a timing-expert photographer. Due to the combination of an unusual angle and the reflective effect of the water, Clary looks less like a flesh-and-bone man and more like a rubbery doll.
