Like a Fish in Water
Timing truly is everything when it comes to sports photos. This image looks incredibly mysterious at first, as the synchronized swimmer appears to have a super long body. But after careful analysis, it’s possible to see that there are two women in the photo, not just one. It’s disappointing, as we thought we were looking at a real-life mermaid for the first time!
Mermaids have been the subjects of myths and legends for millennia, with the first references to the fantastical half-woman, half-fish creatures appearing in Syria around 1,000 B.C. Early mermaid tales were inspired by the Assyrian goddess Atargatis.
