O boxe já criava astros e estrelas há muito tempo atrás, e Sugar Ray foi um dos boxeadores que mais brilharam dentro dos ringues. Seu talento fez com que os jornalistas esportivos da época criassem um sistema de classificação de peso de lutadores para que pudessem analisar o desempenho deles com diferentes pesos sendo considerados.
Tanto sucesso colaborou para a construção de um patrimônio sólido e a aquisição de um Cadillac 1950, que custou cerca de US$5 mil (R$20 mil) na época, quando o dólar valia muito mais.
