El reactor cuatro de Chernobyl fue sellado inicialmente con un protector de sarcófago, una solución que proporcionó cierta seguridad, aunque todos sabían que no sería permanente. Se utilizó una mezcla de plomo, arena y boro para cubrir el núcleo, y una estructura de hormigón fue rígida sobre él. Sin embargo, con el tiempo, el sarcófago comenzó a deteriorarse, presentando grietas y fugas que pusieron en riesgo la contención de la radiación.
En 2016, Ucrania inició la construcción de un nuevo sarcófago para reemplazar la estructura original. Aun así, las autoridades estiman que la limpieza total no se completará hasta 2065. Generaciones de funcionarios pasarán, pero el futuro de Chernobyl seguirá marcado por su trágico pasado.
