Una vez que la amenaza inmediata del yodo radiactivo disminuyó, el mayor riesgo provenía del suelo contaminado. La explosión de Chernóbil liberó cesio-137 y estroncio-90, dos isótopos altamente peligrosos. El estroncio-90, similar al calcio, se detectó en pequeñas cantidades en la leche de las zonas afectadas, mientras que el cesio-137, que se comporta como el potasio, se acumuló en los tejidos y la sangre de los animales.
Estos eventos han sido ampliamente documentados, incluso por abogados de derechos humanos, que han validado la contaminación de los alimentos. Además, los hongos en los bosques de Europa occidental también se vieron contaminados, lo que convirtió a gran parte de la flora en no apta para el consumo, extendiendo el alcance de la tragedia mucho más allá de la zona de exclusión.
