Antes del desastre del 26 de abril de 1986, la central nuclear de Chernóbil ya enfrentaba diversos problemas técnicos. Los expertos locales, calculando en la información que tenían a su disposición, intentarán implementar soluciones alternativas para mantener el reactor en funcionamiento. Sin embargo, todos esos esfuerzos fueron en vano.
El día del accidente, los científicos realizaron varios intentos de reiniciar el reactor número cuatro, pero la situación se descontroló rápidamente. El reactor, sobrecargado de energía, experimentó un inesperado aumento de potencia que desató una serie de explosiones. Este caos no sólo arrasó con el reactor cuatro, sino que también llegó a afectar al reactor tres, dejando a los científicos completamente sorprendidos por la magnitud de la catástrofe.
