La “Pata de Elefante” se encuentra en las entrañas de Chernóbil, justo debajo del reactor cuatro, y es uno de los lugares más radiactivos del planeta. En sus primeros momentos, la radiactividad era tan letal que un minuto de exposición bastaba para causar la muerte inmediata, incluso a personas que se encontraran a cierta distancia. Hoy en día, tan solo 500 segundos de contacto con la Pata de Elefante son suficientes para provocar una muerte.
Lo más aterrador es que la radiación en este lugar permanecerá activa durante al menos 100.000 años, un recordatorio perpetuo de la magnitud de la catástrofe. La muerte causada por exposición a la radiación es un sufrimiento insoportable, conocido por su lento y doloroso avance.
