Slaughterhouse-Five made Kurt Vonnegut famous! However, before he became a writer, he had enlisted in the US Army. His early years during the Great Depression were unpleasant as his once affluent family suffered a loss in business which forced them to take loans. They probably couldn’t even have paid for the most affordable health insurance due to financial constraints. He left Cornell University in order to be in the army. However, as a part of his training, he studied mechanical engineering and then was sent to Europe. He was posted in Dresden where he survived heavy bombing by hiding in a slaughterhouse. His satirical works and writing style have won him several critical acclamation for his novels and stories.
