Donatella Versace wurde als jüngstes von vier Kindern von Santo, Gianni Versace und ihrer Schwester Tina in Reggio di Calabria, Italien, geboren. Antonio, ihr Vater, arbeitete in der Kohlemine der Familie, und Francesca, ihre Mutter, war Näherin für ein Modehaus, bevor sie ihr Geschäft eröffnete.
Tina, ihre ältere Schwester, starb im Alter von 12 Jahren an den Folgen eines unbehandelten Tetanus-Falls. Donatellas Bruder Gianni, ein großer Fan der italienischen Sängerin Patty Pravo, überzeugte sie, mit 11 Jahren blond zu werden.
