Sie war das zehnte und jüngste Kind der Familie Jackson und begann ihre Karriere als Performerin im MGM Grand. Sie gab 1976 ihr Fernsehdebüt in der Varieté-Show The Jacksons und trat in den 1970er und frühen 1980er Jahren in mehreren anderen Shows auf, darunter Good Times, Diff’rent Strokes und Fame.
Sie wurde zu einer Pop-Ikone nach der Veröffentlichung ihres dritten und vierten Studioalbums, Control (1986) und Rhythm Nation 1814, die sie veröffentlicht hatte, nachdem sie 1982 einen Plattenvertrag mit A&M Records abgeschlossen hatte. (1989).
