Als er zum ersten Mal in der Hollywood-Szene auftauchte, galt Mickey Rourke als einer der attraktivsten Männer der Branche. Aufgrund seiner ständigen Schönheitsoperationen sah er jedoch praktisch nicht wiederzuerkennen aus. Am 16. September 1952 wurde in Schenectady, New York, Phillip Andre Rourke, Jr., besser bekannt als Mickey Rourke, als Sohn von Annette Elizabeth (Cameron) und Philip Andre Rourke geboren.
Der Hintergrund seiner Mutter war hauptsächlich englisch und französisch-kanadisch, während seine Väter irisch und deutsch waren. Seine Eltern trennten sich, als er sechs Jahre alt war.
