Sie wurde in Manhattan als Tochter der Schauspielerin Tippi Hedren und des Vaters des Werbeleiters Peter Griffith geboren, verbrachte aber einen Großteil ihrer Kindheit in Los Angeles, wo sie die Hollywood Professional School besuchte und schließlich abschloss. Mit 17 Jahren gab Griffith ihr Filmdebüt an der Seite von Gene Hackman in Arthur Penns Neo-Noir Night Moves (1975).
