L’UNION SOVIÉTIQUE S’EST EFFONDRÉ À CAUSE DU COÛT FINANCIER DE LA CENTRALE
Il existe a priori toute une liste de raisons pour lesquelles l’Union soviétique a pu s’effondrer en 1991. Tchernobyl est cependant cité comme un facteur des plus importants à ce titre eu égard à la somme forfaitaire de 18 millions de dollars américains que l’Union soviétique a dépensée sur cette centrale.
Mikhaïl Gorbatchev a en outre expliqué sur ce point que cette somme a surtout été dépensée pour la sécurisation de la zone et n’inclut pas les dépenses de santé. La situation économique de l’Union soviétique en a cependant été des plus affectées et un retour en arrière s’est révélé impossible.
