Il a été établi que la perte significative de vies humaines durant l’événement de Tchernobyl a surtout été causée par un phénomène appelé l’ionisation de l’air. Il est décrit par les rares survivants de cet incident comme une sorte de lumière bleue qu’ils ont aperçue autour du réacteur de la centrale.
Les personnes qui travaillaient auprès de la centrale nucléaire ont respiré l’iode qui flottait dans l’air, affectant ainsi la glande thyroïde. C’est pourquoi les personnes qui n’ont pas tout de suite perdu la vie à la suite de cette terrible catastrophe ont été rongées lentement par un problème de thyroïde.
