JAMES K. POLK – PRICE UNDETERMINED, ANCESTRAL HOME, COLUMBIA, TENNESSEE
One of the most effective presidents in the pre-Civil War era was James Knox Polk. He was the speaker of the House Of Representatives before he became the president.
He was in office when the US won the Mexican-American War. He also achieved the re-establishment of the Independent Treasury system. His ancestral home where he spent a major part of his youth was built by his father.
As he grew up, this house was a witness to his marriage to Sarah Childress and even partly became his law office. Later, they moved to another home in the same area though, but this house was always special to Polk.
