As far as radiation is concerned, precautions are a must. But if we look back at Soviet Union’s response to the Chernobyl incident, we would term it an under-reaction. However, as far as health was concerned, the Soviet Union seemed to over-react. Leukemia and cancer are common diseases that can happen due to radiation, but Soviet doctors went a step ahead and suggested that all pregnant women must go through abortions in order to save their babies. There was a fear that the babies will be born with health issues and that would pose a question mark on the future of the Soviet Union.
