Los perros Akita, que según se informa pesan 45 kilogramos y tienen un pelaje grueso y esponjoso, tienen un poder notable a pesar de su apariencia, lo que los convierte en excelentes perros guardianes. Fueron criados para ser tanto guardianes como cazadores en la antigüedad de Japón, ya que eran considerados protectores de la familia y estaban capacitados para realizar ambos trabajos. Debido a esto, por lo general están atentos tanto a otros perros como a personas desconocidas, pero cuando se trata de protegerte, no perderán un segundo de pensamiento antes de actuar. Al mismo tiempo, exhiben una cualidad alegre que los hace perfectos para hablar con parientes cercanos y amigos.
