Los logros profesionales del director hispano-el salvadoreño, ampliamente considerado como uno de los mejores cineastas de todos los tiempos, no han cambiado.
Después de graduarse del programa de cine de Madrid, eligió deliberadamente emplear su sensibilidad artística para investigar problemas sociales. Cuando era niño, él y su familia se mudaron de El Salvador a España debido a la inestabilidad política y económica. Finalmente encontró el tipo de éxito que había estado buscando en España.
